The purpose of this paper is to assess the potential impact of the OECD Convention on bribery activities. The first section of the paper defines bribery and discusses its extent, costs and consequences. The following section traces the steps leading up to the OECD Convention and details specific provisions of the Convention. Next, the anti-bribery convention simultaneously adopted by the EU is discussed. The concluding section addresses the need for further international efforts to combat bribery of government officials, as well as the need to assess the impact of the current efforts of the OECD and EU
